Baseball tops #20-ranked Carthage, 11-1

The Wheaton baseball team defeated Carthage College, 11-1 on Wednesday afternoon at Alexian Field. Today's win marked Wheaton's first victory against the Red Men since April 9, 2007, snapping a nine-game losing streak against Carthage.

Wheaton scored 11 runs, on 10 hits, with one error. Carthage plated one run, on four hits, with two errors. Wheaton batters were very patient at the plate today, drawing eight walks, including three walks by catcher Brian Whartnaby

Freshman starting pitcher Eric Albaugh (3-0) earned the victory in seven innings of work. Albaugh allowed one unearned run, on four hits, with five strikeouts and one walk.

Freshman third baseman Trey Martin was 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. Senior Josh Weaver was 2-for-4, with a double as he drove in three runs and score once. Shortstop Brian Kolb was 2-for-5, with three RBI and two runs scored.

Wheaton broke the game open by scoring six runs in the bottom of the second inning. Weaver hit a two-run single in the inning and run scoring singles by Kolb, Charlie Antal and Danny Pyne highlighted Wheaton's big second inning. Wheaton added an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth inning to extend its lead to 7-0.

Carthage scored an unearned run in the top of the sixth inning to make the score 7-1 in favor of the Thunder. Wheaton plated four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to end the game due to the 10-run rule. A two-run single by Kolb started Wheaton's scoring in the seventh inning. Weaver was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to drive in a run. With the bases loaded Drew Golz hit a two-out single to centerfield to drive in Kolb for the game-winning run.

Wheaton is now 15-4 on the year and 3-1 in conference play. Carthage, ranked 20th by D3baseball.com, is now 11-7 on the year and 3-1 in CCIW play. Wheaton will return to Alexian Field on Friday for a CCIW doubleheader with Millikin University at 2 PM (Please note this game was originally scheduled to start at 1 PM). The Thunder and Big Blue will conclude their three game series on Saturday at noon with one game at Legion Field in Carol Stream, Illinois (Please note the location of this game).
