Bloomington, Ill. - The #24-ranked Wheaton baseball team split a doubleheader at Illinois Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon. The Titans won the first game 6-3 and the Thunder rebounded with a 12-1 victory in the second game. Wheaton is now 20-8 overall and 7-5 in CCIW play. Illinois Wesleyan is 12-13 on the season, with a 7-5 record in conference play. The Thunder will play a non-conference contest at Concordia University-Chicago on Monday afternoon in River Forest, Illinois.
The Titans won the first game by a score of 6-3, as the hosts scored six runs, on seven hits, with one error and Wheaton plated three runs, on nine hits, with one error. Thunder starting pitcher
Trey Martin (4-1) took the loss in 6-2/3 innings as he allowed five runs, on seven hits, with three walks and seven strikeouts.
John Pohl pitched 1-1/3 innings of relief as he allowed one unearned run, with no hits, two walks and a strikeout.

Brian Whartnaby was 2-for-4, with a double and a run scored.

Illinois Wesleyan took an early 1-0 lead by scoring one run in the bottom of the first inning. The Titans broke the game open with four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to extend their lead to 5-0. Wheaton cut the hosts' lead to 5-2 with a pair of runs in the top of the eighth inning. Brian Kolb and a RBI-single by sophomore
Justin Zeller. The Titans added a run in the bottom of the eighth inning to take a 6-2 advantage. Whartnaby hit a one-run single in the top of the ninth, but Wheaton could not complete the rally as the Titans emerged with the 6-3 win.
Wheaton won the nightcap 12-1 as the Thunder scored 12 runs, on 20 hits, with no errors and Illinois Wesleyan collected one run, on five hits, with three errors. Senior
John Little (2-2) earned the victory in eight strong innings. Little allowed one Titan run, on five hits, with three strikeouts and two walks.
Matt MaLossi pitched one inning of scoreless relief, with a one walk and one strikeout.
Ryan Miller was 4-for-5, with a double, three runs scored and a RBI. Zeller was 3-for-5, with three RBI and Golz was 3-for-6 with double, a run scored and a run driven in. Kolb was 3-for-6, with two doubles, three runs scored and a RBI.
In the second game, Illinois Wesleyan scored a run in the bottom of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. Wheaton gained a 2-1 lead with two runs in the top of the fifth inning as Kolb drove in a run with a double and Zeller hit a RBI-single in the contest.
The Thunder broke the game open by scoring five runs in the top of the seventh inning to take 7-1 lead.
Charlie Antal scored an unearned run to open the scoring in the inning and
Josh Weaver hit a RBI-single to aid the Thunder cause. Golz hit a double to drive in a run and the five-run inning was capped off by a two-run single by Pyne. Zeller hit a RBI-single in the top of the eighth inning to extend Wheaton's lead to 8-1.
