Baseball earns a 10-1 victory at Benedictine

– The Thunder baseball team continued its strong play with a 10-1 victory at Benedictine University on Monday afternoon. Today's win was the seventh consecutive victory for Wheaton, improving its record to 12-3 on the year. Benedictine is now 3-8 on the season. The same two teams will play the final game in this season's three-game series on Wednesday afternoon at 4:30 PM at Alexian Field in Schaumburg. PLEASE NOTE: Wednesday's game was originally scheduled as a 2:30 PM start, but will now begin at 4:30 PM.

In today's 10-1 Thunder victory at Benedictine, Wheaton scored 10 runs, on 11 hits, with no errors and Benedictine scored one run, on six hits and the Eagles committed five errors.

Thunder pitcher Jimmy McDonald (1-0) had a strong outing to earn the victory in his first collegiate start. The freshman worked six innings, allowing three hits, with three strikeouts and four walks. Senior Zach Fallon pitched two innings of relief, allowing one run, on one hit, with two walks and three strikeouts. Senior John Pohl pitched the final inning of the game, as he held the Eagles scoreless, with two hits, one walk and a strikeout.

Sophomore Justin Zeller was 3-for-5, with three RBI and two runs scored. Zeller hit two home runs in the game to give him a team-high four round trippers on the season. Sophomore Drew Golz was 3-for-5, with two runs scored. Senior shortstop Brian Kolb was 2-for-4, with a double, as he drove in three runs and scored a pair.

Wheaton plated a pair of runs in the top of the first inning to take an early 2-0 lead. Ryan Miller drew a leadoff walk and two batters later Golz hit a single. Freshman Trey Martin stepped up to the plate after Golz an hit a double to leftfield that brought Miller and Golz home to give the guests the lead.

Wheaton broke the game open with four runs in the top of the seventh inning to take a 6-0 lead. Kolb hit a two-run single in the inning and Zeller belted a two-run home run over the fence in right centerfield. Benedictine's lone run came in the eighth inning as the Eagles scored to make it a 6-1 Wheaton advantage. Wheaton added four more runs in the top of the ninth inning to account for the 10-1 final score. Zeller hit a solo home run in the inning, while Kolb added a RBI-double and Charlie Antal hit a RBI-single.
