Box Score
Schaumburg, Ill. - The Wheaton College baseball team broke open the game by scoring six runs in the seventh inning to defeat Dominican University 13-3 on Saturday.
The Thunder won its sixth-straight game to improve its record to 11-3. The Stars fell to 5-7 on the year.
Wheaton got on the board right away in the first inning thanks to a run scoring double play ball and an RBI single by
Drew Golz to take 2-0 lead. It makes the ninth time this season that the Thunder have scored in the opening frame of a game.
The lead stayed at 3-0 until the sixth inning, when outfielder
Charlie Antal smacked a three-run homer over the left-field fence for his first home run of the year.
Dominican tried to rally in the bottom of the sixth with a two-run single, but stranded the bases loaded to make the score 6-2.
But that was as close as the Stars would get the rest of the game. A two-run error in the seventh inning jump started the Wheaton offense once again. After capitalizing on the miscue, Antal hit a check-swing double to right field over the drawn-in infield to score two more runs. RBI singles by
Ryan Miller and
Josh Weaver capped the big inning.
Dominican scored one run in the eighth while Wheaton's
Josh Williams added a sacrifice fly RBI in the ninth to close out the scoring.
The Thunder offense banged out 18 hits, which marks the 10th game this year that they have reached double digit hits.
Brian Kolb was a perfect 5-for-5 at the plate while Antal went 3-for-4 with five RBI.
Danny Pyne,
Justin Zeller, Miller and Golz all had two hits each.
Steve Dennison (4-0) threw seven strong innings to get the victory. He allowed six hits, two runs, two walks and struck out four. He got out of a bases-loaded jam twice and stranded eight Dominican runners.
Dominican was held to eight hits in the game. Anthony Davey (1-1) took the pitching loss in six innings of work. The lefty allowed eight hits, six runs (four earned), with three walks and two strikeouts.
The Thunder continue its schedule with a 4:30 PM game on Monday at Benedictine University.
