The Thunder baseball team earns a 7-4 victory at Benedictine University

The Wheaton baseball team won its fifth consecutive game on Friday with a 7-4 victory at Benedictine University. Wheaton scored seven runs, on 10 hits, with one error and Benedictine scored four runs, on five hits, with two errors.

Wheaton is now 10-3 on the season, while Benedictine falls to 3-7 overall. The Thunder will play at Dominican University on Saturday at 1 PM. Saturday's game will be played at Alexian Field in Schaumburg.

Freshman starting pitcher Trey Martin earned the victory for the Thunder to improve his record to 3-0 on the season. Martin worked 6-1/3 innings for the Thunder, allowing four runs, on five hits, with four walks. Freshman Eric Albaugh faced two batters, allowing two walks. Senior John Little earned the save in relief as he pitched the final 2-2/3 innings. Little held the Eagles scoreless, with no hits allowed, three strikeouts and one walk.

First baseman Danny Pyne was 2-for-3, with two runs driven in. Sophomore Drew Golz hit a pair of doubles as he went 2-for-3, with a walk, three runs scored and a RBI. Senior third baseman Mark Price was 2-for-5, with a RBI.

Wheaton broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fourth inning when Price hit a RBI single to drive in Golz who reached in the previous at-bat on a Benedictine error. Wheaton extended its lead to 5-0 in the top of the fifth inning as Pyne hit a two-run single and Golz contributed a RBI-double.

Benedictine reached the scoreboard with a run in the bottom of the sixth inning to cut Wheaton's lead to 5-1; however Wheaton added another run in the top of the seventh to extend its lead to 6-1. The Eagles plated three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to cut Wheaton's lead to 6-4. Little entered the game in the bottom of the seventh, with Wheaton leading 6-3 one out and the bases loaded. The Thunder senior forced the first batter he faced to fly out and on the next at-bat, Little induced a ground out to second base as he got Wheaton out of the inning. Wheaton added the game's final run in the top of the ninth inning when Golz, who drew a leadoff walk, scored on an Eagle passed ball.
