North Park tops Wheaton 3-2 in overtime of CCIW Tournament Finals

Wheaton, Ill. – The Thunder men's soccer team lost a 3-2 decision in overtime on Saturday against North Park University in the Championship match of the 2010 CCIW Tournament. Wheaton is now 11-7-3 on the season, while North Park is 12-4-2 on the year. With tonight's victory, North Park earns the CCIW's automatic bid to the 2010 NCAA Division III Championship. The NCAA will announce its tournament pairings on Monday at 1 PM in a selection show online at www.ncaa.com.

North Park took a 1-0 lead early into tonight's match when Kris Grahn scored in a shot from 10 yards out, just 3:12 into the match. North Park maintained its 1-0 lead for the remainder of the first half, despite being out-shot 10-5 in the half.

Wheaton junior Drew Golz scored at the 57:46 mark of the match on an assist from sophomore Jason Lollar who passed the ball from the right edge of the penalty box. Golz's goal tied the contest at 1-1. North Park's Filip Lindmark gave the Vikings a 2-1 lead with a goal that was assisted by James Kristicos at the 74:42 mark of the match. The Wheaton offense kept continual pressure on North Park in the final six minutes of the match and that pressure paid off with just 35-seconds left in the match when Golz tallied his second goal of the match. Golz header was setup by a Stephen Mesko corner kick that was tapped by Cory Weaver who found Golz to tie the match at 2-2 in the final minute.

The two teams went to the first overtime and the first shot of the extra session resulted in a goal by Grahn of North Park to give the Vikings the 3-2 victory.

Wheaton out-shot the Vikings 21-12 in the match, with a 10-4 edge in shots on goal. North Park was awarded six corner kicks and Wheaton had five corner kicks. North Park goalkeeper Tim Ahlberg made nine saves and allowed two goals. Wheaton netminder Ryan Seager made one save and allowed three goals.
