Elmhurst, Ill.- The Wheaton women's soccer team used three late goals to overcome a lengthy scoreless stretch on Wednesday in a 3-0 victory at Elmhurst College. Wheaton improves to 7-1-0 overall and 1-0 in CCIW play by winning its conference opener today. The Bluejays are now 5-3-0 overall and 1-1-0 CCIW action. Wheaton will return home on Saturday for a 4 PM contest against Calvin College at Joe Bean Stadium.
Wheaton and Elmhurst battled through a scoreless first half, as Wheaton out-shot the hosts 5-2. The Thunder put relentless pressure on Elmhurst in the second half, outshooting the hosts 20-4 in the second.
Wheaton's offensive attack finally paid off with less than 11 minutes remaining in regulation. Sophomore Ali Kopelman headed the ball into the net off of a Brittany Bergh cross at the 79:49 mark of the match. Less than three minutes later, freshman Val Lelle headed the ball into the net off a Taryne Lee assist to extend Wheaton's lead to 2-0 at the 82:21 mark of the match. Lee tallied her ninth goal of the season on a rebounded shot off Elmhurst's goalkeeper at the 88:56 mark of the match to account for the 3-0 final score.
Wheaton goalkeeper Hillary Barreto made three saves, in 90 minutes of work to record her second shutout of the season. Elmhurst netminder Jessica Eberle allowed three goals and made 11 saves in 90 minutes in the Bluejays' net. Wheaton out-shot Elmhurst 25-6 in the match, with an 11-2 edge in corner kicks.
