BOXSCORE
Wheaton, Ill. – The Wheaton men's soccer team earned a hard-fought 1-0 victory against Dominican University on Wednesday evening at Joe Bean Stadium. The Stars came into tonight's match ranked 15th in this week's Division III Coaches Poll from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).
Both teams battled through a scoreless first half that saw them combine for three shots. In the first 6-1/2 minutes of the second half the Stars out-shot Wheaton, 5-1. The Thunder held on and Wheaton's tenaciousness paid off later in the half. At the 81:15 mark of the second half Wheaton was awarded a free kick. Following the free kick, Thunder sophomore
Cory Weaver gave the ball to senior
Matt Swartz off of a touch pass and Swartz blasted the ball into the net at 81:21 to break the scoreless tie, with his fourth goal of the year.
Thunder head coach Mike Giuliano said of Swartz's goal, “We had a good opportunity and took advantage of it. If you hang around the goal long enough good things will happen.” The Thunder head coach added, “This is a good victory. We are trying to ride out the loss of some players due to injury and we have several other players who are playing hurt right now. Dominican is as good a technical team as we will see this year. This victory should help build our confidence.”
Dominican held a 10-8 advantage in shots tonight, including a 9-6 edge in the second half. Wheaton took five corner kicks in the contest and Dominican had four. Thunder sophomore
Kit Carson played all 90 minutes in Wheaton's net, making six saves as he posted his third shutout of the season. Dominican netminder Ben Gomez made four saves and allowed one goal in 90 minutes of work in the Stars' net.
Wheaton improves to 4-2-0 on the year, while Dominican takes its first loss with a 3-1-1 record this season. The Thunder will return to action on Friday night at 7 PM when fifth-ranked Loras College visits Joe Bean Stadium. Friday's game will be broadcast on WETN radio and television, with live streaming video on the internet at www.wetn.org.
