Baseball falls to Concordia (Ill.), 9-5

Schaumburg, Ill. - The Wheaton baseball team lost a non-conference contest to Concordia University (Ill.), 9-5 on Tuesday afternoon at Alexian Field. Wheaton is now 11-13 on the year, while Concordia improves to 13-9 overall.

Today's game was first of three consecutive home games for the Thunder, with the next contest coming on Wednesday against North Central in a 3 PM start against the Cardinals at Alexian Field. Wednesday's game will be broadcast on WETN radio at 88.1 FM in the Wheaton area and on the internet at www.wetn.org. Live in-game statistics will be available on the Wheaton Athletics Website.

Concordia scored nine runs, on 11 hits, with one error and Wheaton plated five runs, on seven hits, with two errors. Wheaton starting pitcher Steve Noble (0-2) took the loss in nine innings of work. Noble allowed nine earned runs, on 11 hits, with six strikeouts and one walk. Thunder catcher Will Thompson was 1-for-2, with two RBI as he belted his first collegiate home run. Starting catcher Kyle Bradley was 1-for-2, with a double and sophomore Luke Ross also was 1-for-2. Freshman outfielder Justin Zeller drew three walks in the game as he was 1-for-1, with a double.

Concordia took an early 1-0 lead with a run in the top of the first inning. Wheaton tied the game at 1-1 with an unearned run in the bottom of the first inning. The Cougars took a 4-1 lead with three runs in the top of the third inning and the guests added three more runs in the top of the fourth inning for a 7-1 lead. Zeller hit a leadoff double to right field to open the bottom of the fourth inning and he scored two batters later on a sacrifice fly by Mark Price, as Wheaton cut the Cougars' lead to 7-2. Wheaton added another run in the bottom of the fifth inning as Bradley hit a leadoff double and he scored two batters later on a fielder's choice that was hit by Charlie Antal to cut the Concordia advantage to 7-3.

Wheaton added to more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning as Ross hit a one-out single and Thompson followed with a two-run home run over the right field fence to cut Concordia's lead to 7-5. Concordia scored two insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning to account for the 9-5 final score.
