University of Chicago tops the Thunder 9-6 in 10 innings

– The Wheaton College baseball team lost to University of Chicago, 9-6 in 10 innings on Wednesday at Alexian Field. It was Wheaton's second game of the day, following a 2 PM make-up game against Illinois Wesleyan earlier in the afternoon. Chicago scored nine runs, on nine hits, with one error and Wheaton tallied six runs, on 13 hits, committing eight errors. Wheaton is now 20-16 on the season and Chicago is 14-10. The Thunder will conclude the regular season this weekend with a three-game series against Millikin in Decatur.

In the bottom of the third inning sophomore outfielder Charlie Antal belted a three-run home run over the fence in leftfield. It was Antal's ninth round-tripper of the season as he tied Wheaton's single-season record for home runs. Antal matches the nine home runs hit by Wheaton's all-time home run champ, Dave Phillips in 1992.

Chicago led the Thunder 2-0 after two innings, however, Antal's three-run blast in the bottom of the third inning gave the hosts a 3-2 lead. Each team scored a run in the fourth inning as Wheaton held a 4-3 lead thanks to Wheaton's Justin Zeller hitting a RBI-single in the inning.

Outfielder Matt Fenlason hit a RBI-single in the bottom of the fifth inning to extend Wheaton's lead to 5-3. Chicago scored two runs in the top of the sixth inning to tie the game at 5-5. In the bottom of the eighth inning, Steve Dennison drove in a run on a sacrifice fly to give the Thunder a 6-5 advantage. The Maroons tied the game at 6-6 with a run in the top of the ninth inning. The guests plated three runs in the top of the 10th inning to account for the final outcome of 9-6.

Starting pitcher Matt MaLossi worked five innings, allowing four runs, with two earned runs, on five hits. Steve Noble (2-3) took the loss in five innings of relief as he allowed five runs, with one earned run, on four hits, striking out seven.

Antal was 3-for-4, with the record-tying home run as he drove in three runs and scored twice. All-American shortstop Brian Kolb was 3-for-6. Centerfielder Justin Zeller was 2-for-5, with a walk, a run scored and a RBI.
