Bloomington, Ill. – The Thunder baseball team picked up its fifth consecutive victory on Wednesday with a 3-2 win at Illinois Wesleyan. Wheaton improves to 18-15 overall and 10-6 in CCIW, while Illinois Wesleyan is now 20-9 overall and 11-4 in the CCIW. The two teams will conclude their three-game series on Saturday when the Titans visit Alexian Field in Schaumburg for a noon doubleheader with the Thunder. Wheaton picked up the 3-2 victory, with three runs, on eight hits, with no errors and the Titans scored two runs, on five hits, with two errors. Wheaton junior
Tim Urbanowicz (7-1) picked up the win in nine innings of work as he tossed his third complete game of the season. Urbanowicz allowed two runs, on five hits, with nine strikeouts and six walks.
Thunder freshman
Ryan Miller was 2-for-4, with a double and a walk. Sophomore
Charlie Antal went 1-for-3, with a double and a run scored.
Wheaton took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning as junior
Brian Kolb hit a one-out single, followed by a
Justin Zeller single. A ball hit by
Steve Dennison in the following plate appearance allowed Kolb to score to give the hosts the early lead. Illinois Wesleyan tied the game with a run in the bottom of the third inning and the hosts took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning with another run.
Wheaton secured the eventual victory with a pair of runs in the top of the eighth inning. Sophomore
Danny Pyne led off the eighth with a single to left centerfield and he went to third base on a double by Antal.
Brian Whartnaby, Wheaton's next batter hit a ball that was mis-played by Illinois Wesleyan as Pyne crossed the plate to tie the game and Antal followed with the go ahead run. Urbanowicz closed the door on the Titans, as the hosts went hitless with three strikeouts in the eighth and ninth innings.
