Elmhurst, Ill. – The Thunder baseball team won a pair of games against Elmhurst College on Saturday afternoon to accomplish a three-game sweep of the Bluejays. Wheaton defeated Elmhurst 14-4 in game one and the Thunder won the second game 19-10. Wheaton is now 17-15 overall and 9-6 in CCIW play, while Elmhurst falls to 11-18 overall and 3-12 in league action. Wheaton will travel to Illinois Wesleyan on Wednesday night for a 6 PM contest against the Titans.
Wheaton was a 14-4 victor in the opener as the Thunder scored 14 runs, on 14 hits, with no errors and Elmhurst scored four runs, on nine hits, with two errors. Thunder starting pitcher
Steve Dennison (3-2) earned the complete game victory in seven innings of work. Dennison allowed four runs, on nine hits, with three walks and six strikeouts.
Freshman
Ryan Miller was 4-for-5 in the opener, with a double and three RBI. Dennison helped his own cause with a 3-for-5 effort, with two runs scored, hitting a home run.
Charlie Antal was 2-for-2, with a home run, four RBI, two walks and a stolen base. Catcher
Brian Whartnaby was 2-for-3, with a home run, scoring three runs and a run driven in.
In game two Wheaton scored 19 runs, on 18 hits, with no errors and Elmhurst plated 10 runs, on 14 hits, with one error. Starting pitcher
John Little worked 2-2/3 innings, with four runs, on eight hits, with one walk and one strikeout.
Zach Fallon faced two batters and
Steve Noble (2-2) worked two innings of relief, earning the win. Noble allowed five runs, on three hits, with one walk and two strikeouts.
John Pohl picked up the save in 4-1/3 innings of relief as he allowed one run, on three hits, with three strikeouts.
Antal continued his strong day, going 4-for-6 in the nightcap, with three home runs, driving in six runs and scoring three times. Dennison was 3-for-5, with a double as he scored three runs.
Mark Price went 3-for-5, with two doubles, two RBI and two runs scored. Whartnaby was 3-for-6, with three runs scored as he belted a triple and a double.
With four home runs on the day, Antal now has seven home runs this season to move him into a tie for second-place on Wheaton's single-season home run list. He is two round-trippers away from
Dave Phillips' record of nine, set in 1992.
