Chicago, Ill. – The Thunder baseball team dropped a pair of games in a CCIW doubleheader at North Park on Saturday afternoon. North Park topped the Thunder 4-1 in the opener and the Vikings defeated Wheaton 8-4 in the nightcap. Wheaton is now 13-15 overall and 6-6 in conference play.
The Thunder will return to action on Monday night at 7 PM when the team is scheduled to host Aurora University at Alexian Field in Schaumburg. Monday's game will be broadcast on WETN radio, with live in-game statistics available here.
North Park was a 4-1 victor in today's opener as the Vikings scored four runs, on seven hits, with no errors and Wheaton plated one run, on two hits, with three errors. North Park hurler Mike Giovenco held the Thunder to just two hits in a complete game victory. Wheaton starting pitcher Steve Dennison (2-2) took the loss in eight innings of work. Dennison allowed four runs, on seven hits, with seven strikeouts and three walks.
A double by Dennison and a single by freshman Justin Zeller accounted for Wheaton's hits in the game. Sophomore Danny Pyne drove in Wheaton's run in the game.
North Park earned the 8-4 victory in the second game as the hosts scored eight runs, on 13 hits, with two errors and Wheaton tallied one run, on nine hits, with one error. Thunder starting pitcher (1-2) Zach Fallon took the loss in three innings of work. Fallon allowed eight runs, with six earned runs, on seven hits, with two walks and two strikeouts. Senior Brandon Bradley worked three innings of relief as he held the Vikings scoreless, scattering five hits, with four strikeouts and no walks. Senior Ed McCaskey pitched two innings of scoreless relief, holding the hosts to just one hit, as he struck out one batter and allowed no walks.
Dennison was 2-for-3, with a home run as the Thunder designated hitter, as he drove in three of Wheaton's four runs in the game. Pyne was 2-for-3, with a run scored. Freshman Ryan Miller was 2-for-4, with a walk and a run scored.
