Baseball sweeps Dominican in the home opener

Schaumburg, Ill. - The Wheaton baseball team (7-6) swept a doubleheader against Dominican University on Friday at Alexian Field, the new home of the Thunder. Wheaton was a 2-1 victor in the opener and the Thunder earned a 3-2 victory in the nightcap. Wheaton will travel to Rockford College on Saturday for a noon doubleheader against the Regents at Road Runner Park in Loves Park, Ill.

In Wheaton's 2-1 win in the opener, junior pitcher Tim Urbanowicz (3-0) was strong, as he tossed a complete game to earn the win as he improved to 3-0 on the year. Urbanowicz scattered six hits, allowing just one run as he struck out six Stars in the game. Wheaton scored two runs, with five hits and no errors, while Dominican scored one run, scattering six hits, with one error.

Dominican scored one run in the top of the first inning to take an early 1-0 lead. Urbanowicz allowed four hits over the first 1-2/3 innings of the game and then held the Stars hitless for next four innings, as Dominican's next hit did not come until there were two out in the top of the sixth inning. Wheaton took advantage of Urbanowicz's strong work on the mound as the Thunder tied the game at 1-1 with a run in the bottom of the third inning. Sophomore catcher Brian Whartnaby led off the bottom of the third inning with a single to right field. Whartnaby advanced to second base on a single by Charlie Antal and then he scored on a one-out single to right field by freshman Ryan Miller. Wheaton put together another run in the bottom of the sixth inning to account for the 2-1 final score. Sophomore Danny Pyne led off the bottom of the sixth with a single to left centerfield and he advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt by junior Josh Weaver. Two batters later junior Mark Price drove in Pyne with a go-ahead single.

Wheaton was a 3-2 winner in the finale of the twinbill as junior John Little (2-0) tossed a complete game in earning the win. Little scattered six hits and allowed just two runs as he struck out five Dominican batters and did not allow a walk. Little held Dominican hitless for the first 3-2/3 innings of the game. Wheaton scored three runs, with five hits and did not commit an error. Dominican scored two runs, with six hits and no errors.

Wheaton jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning, when Zeller belted a solo home run deep over the fence in left centerfield at Alexian Field. Luke Ross led off the bottom of the third inning with a walk and Antal hit a two-run line drive home run to left field, extending Wheaton's lead to 3-0 after three innings. The Stars scored a run in the top of the fourth inning and added another in the top of the sixth to cut Wheaton's lead to 3-2. Dominican's leadoff batter reach first to open the top of the seventh inning, however, Little stranded the runner and earned the win as he struck out the final two batters in the Stars' lineup to secure the sweep.
