Wheaton to host NCAA Men's Soccer First & Second Round; Thunder open tournament against Calvin

– The Wheaton College men's soccer team will participate in the 2009 NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Tournament, hosting first and second round matches on November 13-14. Wheaton opens the 2009 tournament on Friday, with a pair of First Round matches at Joe Bean stadium. The Thunder (14-3-3) will face Calvin College (15-4-1) in a first round match of the tournament at approximately 7PM on Friday at Joe Bean Stadium. Friday's other first round match will feature Wartburg College (15-4-1) against University of Chicago at  5 PM. (12-3-3). The victors of Friday's action will play in a Second Round match at Joe Bean Stadium at 6 PM on Saturday.

Wheaton heads into Friday's match against Calvin with a 14-3-3 record on the season. Wheaton, earned the CCIW's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament by advancing from the CCIW Men's Soccer Tournament with a 3-1 edge in a shootout against Elmhurst last Saturday night following a 2-2 with the Bluejays, the 2009 CCIW Champions.

This year's trip to the postseason is Wheaton's 17th consecutive appearance in the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Tournament, the longest active streak in Division III. The program has made 31 NCAA appearances since the Division III Men's Soccer Tournament began in 1974 and is tied with Ohio Wesleyan for the most appearances in this history of the tournament. Wheaton is 40-27-3 (.593) all-time in the postseason, with five Final Four appearances and National Championships in 1984 and 1997. 

Calvin is 15-4-1 on the year and received an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament by winning the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Tournament. Friday's match will be the 47th- meeting between the Thunder and Calvin in men's soccer. The Knights defeated Wheaton 2-1 on September 11 in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Game times will be announced by the NCAA on Tuesday. Admission to the tournament is $6 for adults; students $3; seniors $3; under-12 years old $2; ages 2-and-under will be admitted for free. As a NCAA Championship event, NO passes will be accepted.
