Women's soccer ties IWU 1-1 in CCIW Tournament Semis; Titans advance in a PK shootout

. – The Wheaton College women's soccer team tied Illinois Wesleyan 1-1 through 110 minutes of soccer on Wednesday night in the semifinals of the CCIW Women's Soccer Tournament. Following the conclusion of the second overtime the teams had a penalty kick shootout to determine which team would advance to Saturday's CCIW Tournament Championship. Illinois Wesleyan held a 4-1 advantage at the conclusion of the shootout to advance to the Tournament Championship on Saturday at top-seeded Augustana.

The two teams battled through a scoreless first half in tonight's match as the Titans out-shot Wheaton 6-2 before halftime. At the 68 minute mark Illinois Wesleyan's Elizabeth Sinclair scored on a one-on-one opportunity, thanks to an Emily Hinchman assist as the Titans took a 1-0 lead. Approximately 11 minutes later, Wheaton's Katelyn Kishkunas blasted a shot from about 30 yards out from left of the goal as she put the ball into the upper right corner of the net to tie the game at a 1-1 score 79:01 into the match.

In the third minute of the first overtime Wheaton had a terrific opportunity that hit off the crossbar and less than a minute later another Wheaton scoring opportunity was saved by Illinois Wesleyan goalkeeper Alli Novak.

Each team made its first shot attempt in the shootout. The Titans' second attempt was stopped by Wheaton goalkeeper Hillary Barreto. Wheaton's second opportunity hit the post as the shootout remained a 1-1 tie after two rounds. The Titans converted their next three opportunities to advance to the CCIW Tournament Championship.

Wheaton out-shot the Titans 20-13 tonight, with a 6-2 advantage in the overtime sessions. The Thunder took 10 corner kicks and Illinois Wesleyan had five. Barreto made two saves in Wheaton's net and Novak made seven saves for the Titans.

Illinois Wesleyan is now 15-2-3 on the season, while the Thunder is now 15-4-1 on the year. Wheaton is a candidate for an at-large berth to next week's NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Tournament. The NCAA will announce the participating teams in the 63-team tournament on Sunday night at www.ncaasports.com.
