Wheaton women's soccer wins 3-1 versus Carleton in NCAA First Round

Chicago, Ill. - The Wheaton College women's soccer team beat Carleton College 3-1 on Friday in the First Round of the NCAA Division III Tournament.

The Thunder improved to 16-4-1 overall while the Knights ended their season at 10-6-5. Wheaton will take on site host University of Chicago at 1:00 PM on Saturday in NCAA second round action. The Maroons had defeated Aurora University 2-0 earlier in the day.

The Thunder and the Knights previously faced each other in the first week of the season as Wheaton earned the 4-0 victory at Joe Bean Stadium.

On Friday, the Thunder wasted no time getting on the board as Brittany Bergh scored on a right-footed shot at 2:14 into the game. Taryne Lee and Ali Kopelman# both got assists on the goal.

Six minutes later, Kopelman one-touched a cross from Lee into the right side of the net to make it 2-0. The third Thunder score came from Maria Della Torre, who slotted a ball into the upper right corner of the net from 22 yards out in the 21st minute. Lee picked up her third assist of the match.

Carleton mustered more offensive pressure and intensity in second half. The Knights got on the board as Cassie Burke headed in a free kick with only 11 seconds left in the game.

The Thunder held a 15-8 shot advantage in the game. Wheaton goalkeeper Hillary Barreto made one save in net to get the win. Kate Trenerry made six saves with three goals allowed for Carleton.
