Wheaton, Ill. -- After posting shutouts in both of Wheaton's matches last week, sophomore goalkeeper
Lydia Martin has been recognized as the CCIW Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week. Today's announcement by the conference office marks Martin's first weekly honor, and she is the first Thunder women's soccer player to garner a conference award this season.
Wheaton defeated Augustana College, 2-0, last Wednesday and Martin tallied two saves in the win to earn her first 90-minute clean sheet with the program after transferring in from the University of San Francisco earlier this year. The Nevada native followed up that performance with a second-consecutive shutout on Saturday when she made a late-game stop to deny Carthage College in the Thunder's scoreless draw with the Firebirds. In addition to her saves, Martin's distribution out of the back, positional awareness, and claiming of crosses were key to Wheaton's strong defensive outings last week.
Martin is the first goalkeeper to log two clean sheets in conference play this year and is the only keeper in the CCIW that has yet to concede a goal in a league match.
The sophomore shot-stopper and her teammates are back home at Joe Bean Stadium on Wednesday night for a 7 PM fixture against Carroll University.
