Wheaton, Ill. - Wheaton women's soccer wrapped up their non-conference season this homecoming weekend competing against Simpson College for the first time in program history. While the Thunder established a lead in the first half, they were unable to hang on to it in the second half, falling to the Storm with a final score of 2-1. Wheaton's overall record now stands at 2-7-2, with a return to conference play next week.
The Thunder came out aggressively, registering their first shot attempt under four minutes into the first half. However, Wheaton and Simpson remained locked in a scoreless back-and-forth until less than two minutes remained in the half. At 43:34, a cross from
Cami Tofilon on the right was received on the left by
Calah Strong. Holding a Simpson defender at bay, Strong was able to sink a shot that narrowly curled into the back right corner of the net, bringing the Thunder to a 1-0 lead at the half.
Despite this momentum, the Storm attacked with a vengeance going into the second half. A goal from Abby Bell in the 56
th minute tied up the game, and the winning goal was made by Georgia Paulson in the 75
th minute, putting the Storm on top.
In spite of the result, the Thunder posted impressive offensive statistics this evening, with a total of 27 shot attempts to Simpson's 10, with eight and five shots on goal, respectively. Wheaton also registered nine corners to Simpson's two. Sophomore goalkeeper
Lydia Martin collected three saves in goal this evening.
The Thunder resume conference play this Wednesday at home against Augustana College. The game will be on October 7
th at 7 PM in Joe Bean Stadium.
