Wheaton, Ill. – The Thunder women's soccer team picked up its third consecutive victory with a 4-0 win against Carthage College on Friday afternoon at Joe Bean Stadium. Wheaton, ranked 13th in this week's Division III Coaches Poll, is now 11-2 on the season and 3-0 in conference play. The Thunder will remain in conference play on Wednesday night for a CCIW contest at Augustana College.
Wheaton took an early lead in the match, as the result of a Carthage foul in the box. The foul resulted in a converted
Jaime Orewiler penalty kick, just 7:45 into the match. The score was Orewiler's fourth goal of the season. The score remained a 1-0 Thunder advantage for the rest of the first half.
Wheaton scored three goals in a span of about seven minutes in the second half to extend its lead. Thunder senior
Taryne Lee knifed through the Carthage defense and beat goalkeeper Angela Spinelli to score her 14th goal of the year at the 61:44 mark of the match. Freshman
Val Lelle headed the ball into the net at 67:43 off of a
Brittany Bergh assist to extend the hosts lead to 3-0. Just over a minute later,
Mary Beth Grove scored on a loose ball in front of the net for a 4-0 Wheaton advantage at 68:46 into the match.
Wheaton out-shot Carthage 26-5, with a 9-4 advantage for the Thunder in corner kicks. Wheaton netminder Hillary Barreto made three saves in 90 minutes of action in the Wheaton goal, to post her sixth shutout of the season. Carthage goalkeeper Angela Spinelli made 11 saves, allowing four goals.
