Chandler, Arizona (3/5) – The Thunder baseball team opened its spring trip to Arizona with an 8-5 win against Concordia University (Ill.) on Saturday. Wheaton took its first loss of the season on Monday with a 7-3 loss to Beloit College. The Thunder (1-2) lost a 20-10 decision to Concordia (Ill.) on Tuesday. The Thunder will face DeSales University on Thursday in Anthem, Arizona.
In Saturday's win against Concordia Wheaton rallied from a 4-1 deficit after two innings to earn the win. Wheaton cut the Cougars' lead to 4-3 in the bottom of third thanks for a home run by freshman Tim Urbanowicz and a RBI by senior Matt Price. A four-run fourth inning gave the Thunder a 7-4 lead. Freshman Brian Kolb drove in two runs with a double, while Nick Turner and Josh Baker each added a RBI in the fourth inning.
Price started the game on the mound with 4-2/3 innings of work with five runs, with two earned runs, on four hits, with six strikeouts and five walks. Freshman John Little earned the victory in 3-1/3 innings of relief, allowing two hits and no runs. Sophomore Brandon Bradley pitched one inning of relief to earn the save. Baker was 2-for-3 with the RBI and Turner was 2-for-3, with two RBI and a run scored.
In Monday's loss to Beloit, the Buccaneers took a 3-0 lead with three runs in the top of the second inning. Baker hit a RBI double on the bottom of the third inning to cut the Thunder lead to 3-1. The Buccaneers added another run in the top of the seventh inning. Wheaton scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth thanks to RBI-singles by Turner and Kolb. The Buccaneers added three runs in the top of the ninth to secure the win.
Urbanowicz (0-1) was the starting pitcher for the Thunder, allowing three runs, with two earned runs on four hits in five innings of work. Sophomore Ed McCaskey pitched four inning of relief, allowing four runs, on six hits. Kolb was 3-for-4 with a run scored and Baker was 2-for-4 with a run driven in.
In Tuesday's loss to Concordia, the Cougars jumped out to a 6-2 lead and increased the team's advantage five-run seventh inning and six runs in the eighth inning. Freshman catcher Mike Bravo was 3-for-5 with a home run, with two RBI and two runs. Junior Dan Falvey went 3-for-5 with a run and a RBI. Matt Bradley had a 3-for-6 effort at the plate, with two runs.
