Waukesha, Wis. -- After playing three-consecutive home matches last week, the Wheaton men's tennis team ventured back out on the road this afternoon to continue its CCIW schedule with a test at Carroll University. The Thunder used a dominant singles section to log a 5-2 win over the hosting Pioneers on Tuesday, maintaining the program's perfect record against the Wisconsin side dating back to 2014. Wheaton improves to 5-7 on the year and 2-1 in conference play with today's victory, while Carroll slips to 7-12 with a 2-3 mark in league action.
The Pios won all three doubles fixtures this afternoon to secure the match's first point, including a gritty 7-6 tiebreak at #3 doubles. Carroll's #1 singles player then shook off a first-set bagel to earn his team's second point with an impressive comeback victory.
But Wheaton controlled the individual program on Tuesday, triumphing in straight sets in the other five contests to secure a smooth win.
Andrew Jang registered a 6-2, 6-4 victory at #2 singles, while
David Hill enjoyed a pair of 6-2 successes in his #4 matchup.
Andrew Winters and
Ryder Ward tallied 6-3, 6-4 wins at #3 and #5 singles, respectively, and
Toby Schmidt rounded out the lineup with a confident 6-3, 6-2 result in his duel to punctuate the Thunder's good day on the court.
Having started its week in Wisconsin on a strong note, the Wheaton squad will return to the Badger State this weekend for a match against Carthage College. The Thunder and the Firebirds are now set to meet in Racine at 4:45 PM on Saturday in a contest that has been time and location-adjusted due to an unfavorable weather forecast.
