Wheaton, Ill. -- After a two-week hiatus following its Spring Break trip to Florida, the Wheaton women's tennis team resumed its non-conference schedule on Friday evening with a match against Illinois Institute of Technology at the Wheaton Sport Center. The Thunder continued the program's strong recent form against the Scarlet Hawks by logging a decisive 6-1 win tonight, improving to 13-4 on the season with the result.
IIT earned a hard-fought tiebreak win at the #2 doubles spot on Friday, but this outcome counted for little, as Wheaton claimed the point for the match with comfortable victories at the #1 and #3 lines.
Madeline Gentry and
Tatum Thurstone combined for a 6-2 win at #1 doubles, while the combination of
Sophie Dew and
Carly O'Leary put in a flawless 6-0 showing in the third doubles fixture.
Gentry and Thurstone completed their personal match sweeps this evening with straight-set wins of 6-2, 6-3 and 6-2, 7-6 at #1 and #2 singles, respectively.
Ella Malone reversed Gentry's set scores with a smooth 6-3, 6-2 victory at #3 singles, while Dew went two-for-two on the night with a one-sided 6-2, 6-1 statement at #5 singles. Fellow freshman
Mia Luo remained perfect in #6 singles play with her second-consecutive double-bagel win, marking the sixth time this season that she has won her solo contest without dropping a game.
Having returned to competition with a straightforward team win, the Thunder will now enter another two-week pause in their spring schedule before returning to play on Saturday, April 11 with a home match against UW-Eau Claire.
