Orlando, Fla. -- Fresh off of its 7-0 sweep of Minnesota Morris on Wednesday evening, the Wheaton women's tennis team headed to the USTA National Campus complex in Orlando this afternoon for the second of its three Spring Break matches. MIAA side Saint Mary's College (IN) provided today's opposition, and the Belles logged their first-ever win over the Thunder in dramatic fashion with a hard-fought 4-3 result. Wheaton's season record is 11-4 after Thursday's competitive battle, while Saint Mary's now owns a 10-5 mark for the year.
The Thunder's #1 doubles duo of
Madeline Gentry and
Tatum Thurstone romped to a lopsided 6-1 win in their contest to begin the combined matches on a strong note. But the Indiana squad picked up successes at #2 and #3 doubles to claim what would ultimately be the decisive point in today's meeting.
The two sides split the singles contests this afternoon with three wins apiece, which was all Saint Mary's needed to seal the match win. The Belles earned a pair of straight-set results before picking up a vital third-frame tiebreak win at #1 singles to account for their three solo points.
Thurstone doubled up for the match with a smooth 6-4, 6-4 victory at #2 singles, and CCIW Student-Athlete of the Week
Sophie Dew contributed a similar 6-3, 6-4 win at the five spot. Fellow freshman
Mia Luo was taken to three sets for the first time in her collegiate career after capturing the opening frame of her #6 matchup, 7-5. But the Canada native held her nerve to secure a thrilling 11-9 tiebreak game win and improved to an outstanding 13-0 on the year in singles play as a result.
Wheaton will conclude its three-day run of matches in the Sunshine State with a 3:30 PM (ET) duel against St. Norbert College in Altamonte Springs on Friday.
