Wheaton, Ill. – A week after defeating the St. Francis Fighting Saints in the spring season-opener, the Wheaton women's tennis team looked to maintain its strong form this afternoon as it took on Kalamazoo College. These two squads were facing off for the second-consecutive season after the Hornets snapped the program's six-match losing streak to the Thunder in Michigan one year ago. Kalamazoo again picked up the win on Saturday, as the MIAA side topped Wheaton, 5-2.
The doubles portion of today's match proved to be competitive, but the Hornets managed to snatch all three results. #2 doubles pair
Janet Kondo and
Ella Malone were narrowly edged out, 6-4, despite trailing 5-2 at one point.
Sophie Dew and
Carly O'Leary were tied at 3-3 before eventually falling 6-3 in #3 doubles.
The visitors would continue their strong performance into singles play. Kalamazoo won the first four solo fixtures in straight sets, before
Mia Luo gave the Thunder their first point with a 6-1, 6-3 decision in #6 singles to remain undefeated in individual play this season. Meanwhile, Dew grinded her way to an impressive 1-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-2) comeback victory in #5 singles in a match that eclipsed two hours in length.
With today's result, the Thunder fell to 10-3 on the season while the Hornets picked up a fourth win of their spring campaign. Wheaton's next three matches will take place in less than two weeks in the Sunshine State for the program's annual Spring Break series. The team will first take on the Minnesota-Morris Cougars on Wednesday, March 11.
