Hanover Park, Ill. – After a successful fall campaign which saw the Thunder compile a 7-1 conference record and the #2 seed in April's CCIW Tournament, the women's tennis team returned to action on Saturday for its first match of the spring season. The Wheaton Thunder squared off against the St. Francis Fighting Saints out of the CCAC. Today's matchup was the second-ever contest between these two squads with the first meeting occurring three years ago. The Thunder earned a 6-1 victory over the Fighting Saints this afternoon for their first win of the spring season.
The Thunder started strong, winning all three doubles matches. Doubles pair
Janet Kondo and
Ella Malone came out with a 6-0 shutout victory in No. 2 doubles, while
Madeline Gentry and
Tatum Thurstone in No. 1 doubles and
Sophie Dew and Calry O'Leary in No. 3 doubles earned straightforward wins at 6-3 and 6-1, respectively.
The singles portion produced nearly the same results as doubles. St. Francis earned its lone point of the match in No. 1 singles, but the Thunder took care of the rest of the fixtures. Thurstone dominated with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep in No. 2 singles.
Mia Luo kept her undefeated streak alive with a 6-1, 6-0 statement in No. 5 singles. Meanwhile,
Carly O'Leary earned her first career win in singles, winning 6-1, 6-0. The same could be said for Dew, who produced the same 6-1, 6-0 result as Luo and O'Leary in No. 4 singles.
With the win, the Thunder picked up their tenth victory of the season and extended their winning streak to five matches. Wheaton will take on the Kalamazoo Hornets at the Wheaton Sport Center in another Saturday non-conference showdown next weekend.
