Women's Swimming keeps its lead atop the standings after five title wins and another Boyer record

Lydia Hansen's solo victory and relay win helped power the Thunder on Friday
Pleasant Prairie, Wis. -- The penultimate day of this year's CCIW Swimming Championships arrived on Friday, and the Thunder women's team moved one step closer to a record-extending 27th conference title thanks to a highly successful slate of performances. Wheaton captured the top spot on the podium in all but one of the six women's competition finals this evening and maintained its place atop the standings as a result. The event program was highlighted by Tess Boyer's second-straight meet record in the IM category, as the junior bettered her own existing conference standard with another outstanding showing.

The Thunder lead the seven-team rankings heading into the final day of the conference meet with a current total of 580 points, 25 more than Augustana College in second place. Carthage College is not far behind in third with 515 points, while Illinois Wesleyan is on an island in fourth position, trailing the Firebirds by 150 and leading fifth-placed Carroll University by 174 points.

The Orange and Blue sustained its perfect record in the women's relay races thus far with a victory in the 200-yard medley to begin Friday's finals schedule. Savannah Jeffery, Lydia Hansen, Boyer, and Aubrey Swanson teamed up to win the event with a season-best 1:46.84 time, improving on their seed line by 2.66 seconds and besting their Augie challengers in second place by 2.53. Boyer then immediately doubled up on the night with a solo victory in the 400 IM that saw her rewrite the record books once again. The All-American posted a prelim time of 4:24.76 to break the existing conference championship record in the event that was set in 2015 by .65 seconds. But just as she did in Thursday's 200 IM competition, Boyer surpassed her first performance with an even stronger 4:21.41 finals time that establishes the new top mark at the CCIW meet. This 4:21.41 count also updates her record-breaking time in the 400 IM that was set at the Wheaton Invitational in December to serve as the new overall conference standard in the event, regardless of meet.

Boyer's performance this evening en route to her third-consecutive conference crown in the 400 IM currently ranks as the fourth-fastest time in all of Division III women's swimming this season. Olivia Wiebe captured the silver medal in the event with her best showing of the campaign in the 400, posting a finals time of 4:42.55 to add even more points to Wheaton's overall tally. Hansen matched Boyer on one relay gold medal and one individual conference title in Friday's program with a victory in the 100-yard breaststroke. The rookie swam a 1:05.81 line that was nearly two seconds faster than her nearest challenger from Carthage and ranks as the best time in the conference this season by an impressive 2.26-second margin.

Fellow freshman Kate Zurowski joined her two aforementioned first-year teammates on the winners' dais by triumphing in the 100-yard backstroke competition. She registered a finals mark of 59.16 to take full points as one of only three women's swimmers in the conference this season to complete the event in less than one minute. Another swimmer in that category was her senior teammate Jeffery, who earned a second-place standing tonight with a season-best 59.38 time.

Despite Augustana making up some ground and slightly closing the gap between first and second place on Friday, Wheaton remains in pole position to reclaim the conference crown after back-to-back wins for the Vikings in the last two years. Saturday's decisive schedule of events will begin with another round of 10:30 AM prelims before the championships conclude at 6 PM.
