Kansasville, Wis. -- Three days after hosting the CCIW Preview, the Wheaton women's golf team traveled north across state lines to take part in another annual competition, the Midwest Region Fall Classic hosted by Benedictine University. The large event was held at Brighton Dale Links in Wisconsin and was scheduled to consist of two 18-hole rounds over the course of Friday and Saturday. But today's second round was interrupted by lightning and severe weather, so the tournament was changed to a single-round scoring format and only Friday's results were counted in the official tabulation. Four Wheaton golfers competed in this weekend's Classic, and despite rising up to 25th when the tournament was prematurely halted, the Thunder had to settle for a 29th-place finish in the 39-team event based on Friday's results.
Emma Lee posted the top score for Wheaton once again on Friday and earned an 89th-place standing in the 227-player field.
Despite sitting eight strokes behind Aurora University when play was stopped this afternoon, the University of Northwestern-St. Paul won this weekend's tournament by virtue of a 303 (+15) combined team total on Friday. Wheaton tallied a score of 374 in the opening round and finished in 29th place as a result of this mark, just one shot behind The College of St. Scholastica and four strokes in front of a group from Alma College. The Thunder were at the halfway mark of their second round when the competition was halted on Saturday and had carded a combined score of 172 up to that point which had seen them move up the team standings before being bumped back down to 29th.
Lee shot an 86 (+14) on Friday's first set of 18 holes to secure her position in 89th heading into Saturday's second round. The freshman was sitting on a daily mark of 41 (+6) midway through her second 18 when the tournament was prematurely finalized this afternoon, and that partial tally had seen her rocket up 30 spots on the live leaderboard into a tie for 59th place. Fellow first-year golfer
Abby Crutchley entered Friday's clubhouse just three strokes behind Lee on a daily total of 89 (+17) and had moved up into T-75th in the solo standings via an eight-hole mark of six-over this afternoon when the course was vacated.
Ava Hartnett completed the freshman trifecta by in turn being three shots behind Crutchley upon the conclusion of Friday's action, while
Molly Holbert carded a 107 in this weekend's opening round, and both players saw their improved showings on Saturday unfortunately cut short by the inclement weather conditions.
Wheaton does not have a midweek tournament on its schedule in the next few days, so the squad will return to play next weekend in its last event before the CCIW Championship. The Thunder will head down to Decatur to take part in Millikin University's Dechert Classic on Friday and Saturday, September 26-27.
