Notre Dame, Ind. -- The Thunder women's soccer team hit the road on Friday afternoon for the final time in regular season non-conference play, as Wheaton traveled across state lines to face Saint Mary's College (IN). Making its first visit to the Indiana school for 30 years, Wheaton shared a 0-0 tie with the Belles to notch a fourth shutout of the season, three of which have come away from home. Today's result took the Thunder's record to 3-3-2, while Saint Mary's continued its unbeaten start to the campaign and now owns a 5-0-2 season record.
A total of 14 shots were taken in Friday's match, but clinical finishing was in short supply, as the two sides combined for only one effort on goal and both defensive units put in smothering performances. The closest either team came to breaking the deadlock occurred five minutes from the end of regulation when
Grace Crowder directed a header towards the Saint Mary's net that required an impressive leaping save from the Belles' keeper. This chance arrived in the middle of a flurry of Wheaton corner kicks, and the visitors carved out one last opportunity from the set piece position as the final seconds ran off the clock, but the hosts successfully repelled the cross and confirmed the game's scoreless scoreline. Friday's 0-0 outcome saw the Thunder become the first team to hold the Belles scoreless this season and the first visiting side to avoid defeat in Notre Dame.
Saint Mary's posted two more shots than Wheaton this afternoon at an 8-6 count and claimed a slight possession advantage at 54-46%, but Crowder's late header was the only attempt on frame for either squad. The Thunder earned six corner kicks to the Belles' four, and
Leah Roe was not asked to make any saves en route to a fourth clean sheet of her debut season. The home side was whistled for 11 fouls and shown both of the game's yellow cards in a physical display.
Wheaton returns to Bean Stadium on Wednesday night to close out its non-conference slate in a 7 PM matchup with UW-Whitewater before next weekend's Homecoming CCIW opener against Elmhurst University.
