Wheaton women's soccer team draws 0-0 with UW-Whitewater in non-conference finale

Wheaton, Ill. -- The Thunder women's soccer team returned to Joe Bean Stadium on Wednesday night for its ninth and final game of the regular season non-conference slate, as Wheaton welcomed WIAC opponents, the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. Tonight's contest marked the third-consecutive year that the two programs have faced off in the regular season, and unlike in their 2024 and 2023 meetings, scoring was in short supply this time, as the 90 minutes of action produced a 0-0 tie. Wednesday's result moved UW-Whitewater's season record to 5-2-4, while Wheaton's mark is now an even 3-3-3 heading into the start of conference play.

The Thunder began the match on the front foot, getting numbers into the visitors' half of the field and carving out three corner kick chances in the first 24 minutes while also registering the game's first shot attempt. The opening effort on target did not arrive until the 34th minute when a Warhawk player drew a sharp kick save from Wheaton's Leah Roe. The away side would put another shot on frame four minutes later but were denied again as the score remained tied heading into the break. Both of Wheaton's shots on goal in tonight's game occurred between the 61st and 70th minute, with Cami Tofilon and Lily Lindquist each forcing the Whitewater goalkeeper to get down quickly to stop their would-be winners. The last clear look at goal for either side came 11 minutes before the end, as Roe was called into action once again to make another stop. Despite both teams playing for the win and creating chances to score, the two defenses held firm tonight and the Thunder notched their second-straight clean sheet.

Each squad posted six total shot attempts, with the visitors putting four efforts on target to the home side's two. But Wheaton took five corner kicks to Whitewater's two and enjoyed a convincing 61-39% possession advantage for the match.

Lindquist and Tofilon accounted for the Thunder's two shots on goal on Wednesday, while Roe made four saves en route to collecting a fifth shutout of her debut season for the Orange and Blue. Her five clean sheets are currently the most among all CCIW goalkeepers this year.

After wrapping up the non-conference half of their regular season, the Wheaton women will remain on home turf for their first CCIW contest, as the Thunder match up against Elmhurst University on Saturday. The two sides are set to meet at Bean Stadium at 4:30 PM as a part of Wheaton's Homecoming weekend slate.
