Wheaton, Ill. - The Wheaton women's tennis team hosted longtime CCIW rival Carthage on Saturday afternoon at the Wheaton tennis courts. The Thunder defeated the Firebirds, 7-0.
The Thunder started the match by winning two of the three doubles matches as Wheaton earned the team point that come with a doubles advantage. The No. 2 doubles team of
Janet Kondo and
Ella Malone defeated the Carthage duo of Rya Arreazola and Greta Peterson, 6-3. The Wheaton tandem of
Carly O'Leary and
Sophie Dew earned a 7-5 victory against Carthage's No. 3 doubles team of Bella Rizzo and Jordan Miller. Carthage's lone win of the day was a 6-3 win for the Firebirds' No. 1 doubles team of Xingchen Liu and Niki Manojovic against Wheaton'sÂ
Madeline Gentry and
Tatum Thurstone.
Gentry was a 7-6 (14-12), 6-3 victor at No. 1 singles against Liu. Thurstone defeated Arreazola 6-4, 7-6 (7-2) in their matchup at No. 2 singles. Malone earned a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles against Peterson, and Kondo defeated Manojovic 6-3, 6-7 (5-7), 7-6 (7-1) in their match at No. 4 singles. Dew picked up a 6-2, 6-1 win in her match at No. 5 singles against Millier.
Mia Luo was a 7-5, 6-2 victor at No. 6 singles against Rizzo.

Prior to today's match, legendary Wheaton head coach
Jane Nelson was honored for her 40th season as Wheaton's head coach. Wheaton College President, Dr. Philip Ryken and Athletics Director Mike Schauer spoke as they recognized Nelson's significant impact as a coach, mentor and leader in her 40 years. Many of Nelson's former players returned to honor their coach as did many Wheaton coaches and Athletics staff.
Today's win against the Firebirds improved Wheaton to 5-0 overall, with a 3-0 record in CCIWÂ play. Wheaton is off until September 24th when the Thunder host Lake Forest at 5:45 p.m.
