Greencastle, Ind. -- Embarking on its first long-distance road trip of the season, the Wheaton women's soccer team traveled to Indiana on Saturday morning for a nonconference test at DePauw University, marking the program's first visit to Greencastle since 2011. After Wheaton earned a 1-0 home win over the Tigers last September, today's hosts avenged that result with a 3-0 victory of their own. Saturday's contest sees the Thunder's season record dip to 3-2-1, while DePauw continued its strong start to the campaign and now owns a 4-1 overall mark.
Wheaton earned two corner kick opportunities in today's match while limiting DePauw to just one, but the Tigers enjoyed advantages in the other box score categories. The home side tallied 58% of the possession across the 90 minutes of play and posted nine shot attempts while holding the visitors to only one of their own. DePauw put in a clinical attacking performance, directing seven of its nine efforts on target and scoring three times from those seven shots on goal. The hosts' defensive effort was equally impressive, stifling Wheaton's attacking play and not allowing a single shot on target. 14 total fouls were called and no cards were handed out to either side in a clean contest.
Both of the Thunder's corner kicks occurred in the first five minutes of the game as Wheaton made a quick start and looked to grab an early goal. But the Tigers broke the deadlock in the 24th minute and controlled proceedings from that point on.
Leah Roe played the full match in Wheaton's net and registered four saves.
Julia Tallungan tallied the lone shot attempt for the visitors this afternoon when she struck the post with just over a minute remaining in the match.
After consecutive road tests, the Wheaton women's squad will return to Bean Stadium for their next nonconference outing. The Thunder host Hope College on Tuesday in a 4:30 PM matchup.
