Women's Soccer visits #11 University of Chicago in nonconference test

Chicago, Ill. -- The Wheaton women's soccer team traveled into the Windy City on Wednesday afternoon for its third nonconference road match of the young season, as the Thunder renewed their annual series against the University of Chicago. The 11th-ranked Maroons earned a 7-0 win in their home-opener to move to 3-0 on the year. Today's result marks Wheaton's first loss of the season and the team's record is now 3-1-1.

UChicago controlled Wednesday's game from the start, earning a corner kick just shy of the two-minute mark and needing only four minutes to open the scoring. The Maroons netted twice in the 14th minute and grabbed one more shortly before halftime to take the game away from their visitors. The Thunder came close to getting on the scoreboard two minutes after the intermission with a corner kick opportunity and an effort on goal, but the home side repelled these efforts and extended its lead in the 51st minute before adding two more goals halfway through the second period to account for the match's final scoreline.

Chicago fired off 26 total attempts this afternoon, 14 of which were on frame, and drew seven total saves from the two Wheaton goalkeepers who saw the field. The highly-ranked hosts enjoyed the lion's share of possession across the 90 minutes of action and limited their guests to two shots on target, both of which came in the second half. But the corner kick count was nearly even at 3-2 in UChicago's favor and only seven fouls were called in today's clean contest.

Leah Roe once again got the start for Wheaton in goal on Wednesday and made four saves, while Elizabeth Netz entered the match in the second half to make her first appearance of the season and tallied three saves. Four different players registered shot attempts for the Thunder this afternoon, with Grace Crowder and Lauren Walmer posting the team's two efforts on goal.

The Wheaton women's squad will make its first trip beyond the greater Chicagoland area this weekend when the team travels to Greencastle, Indiana to face DePauw University in another nonconference road game. Kick-off between the Thunder and the Tigers is set for 12 PM local time, 11 AM Central on Saturday.
