Women's Tennis sweeps MSOE, 7-0, to claim second win on opening weekend

Wheaton, Ill. -- Facing a short turnaround after the season-opening 4-3 victory over Judson University last night, the Wheaton women's tennis team returned to the campus courts this morning to take on its next nonconference opponent, Milwaukee School of Engineering. For the second-consecutive season, the Thunder earned a perfect 7-0 sweep of the Raiders in a match played on August 30th to pair with last year's indoor victory in Hanover Park. Wheaton is now 2-0 after a successful first weekend of the 2025-26 schedule.

Madeline Gentry and Tatum Thurstone earned their first match win as the Thunder's #1 doubles pairing on Saturday, seeing off their MSOE counterparts, 6-2. Janet Kondo and Ella Malone had an even more straightforward result in the #2 doubles spot with a 6-1 victory, before Sophie Dew and Carly O'Leary added the cherry on top with a competitive 7-5 win at the third position.

Gentry was one of five Wheaton players to claim two wins this afternoon, as the senior rolled past her #1 singles rival at a 6-3, 6-1 line. Thurstone made quick work of her #2 singles matchup, winning 6-2, 6-0, while Malone pulled out a first-set tiebreaker at #3 singles before securing the point with a 6-2 second set win. Kondo required an extra frame in her solo contest after splitting two 6-2 sets but earned a comprehensive 10-2 tiebreak set win to maintain the Thunder's flawless standing on the scoreboard. The freshman pair of Dew and Mia Luo remained perfect at #5 and #6 singles, respectively, with Dew winning both frames at 6-1 and Luo earning a second-consecutive double-bagel victory to begin her collegiate career in style.

After a strong opening weekend of results, the Thunder's attention will now turn to conference play. Wheaton begins its CCIW schedule next Saturday at Elmhurst University in an 11 AM meeting.
