Wheaton Men's Tennis sweeps Elmhurst to stay perfect in conference play

Elmhurst, Ill. -- After a busy stretch of matches last week that saw the Wheaton men's tennis team earn victories over Lake Forest, Millikin, and Illinois Wesleyan, the Thunder traveled to nearby Elmhurst University on Tuesday afternoon for their first conference road test. Wheaton maintained its strong run of form with a perfect 7-0 win over the Bluejays, extending its streak of 11 consecutive victories over today's opponent, the last eight of which have been shutouts. The Thunder are now 4-0 in CCIW action this season and have won seven matches on the spin dating back to their last 7-0 sweep over Curry College one month ago in Florida.

Even with some changes to their usual lineup, the visitors cruised through the doubles portion of Tuesday's contest, winning all three matches and only dropping two games in total. Tim Steiner and Jacob Williams earned their eighth victory of the campaign as the #1 doubles partnership in perfect 6-0 fashion, and this scoreline was matched by the duo of Ryder Ward and Andrew Winters in the third position. The freshman combination of David Hill and Toby Schmidt secured a comfortable 6-2 result at #2 doubles, giving Schmidt his first doubles win at the collegiate level.

Steiner doubled up for the day with a 6-0, 6-2 win at #1 singles, while Evan Walther, Andrew Jang, and Corin Tang all earned flawless double-bagel victories at #2, #3, and #4 singles, respectively. Ward joined Steiner on two match wins this evening with a 6-2, 6-0 showing of his own on the five line, and Samuel Schutz earned his second straight-set win of the year in solo play with a pair of 6-1 frames at #6 singles.

After a smooth win away from home, Wheaton's squad will return to the campus courts for its next match. The Thunder are set to take on Rose-Hulman on Saturday in their last nonconference fixture of the regular season.
