Wheaton, Ill. – Riding a seven-match winning streak, the Wheaton men's tennis team looked to continue its winning ways on Saturday, facing off against Rose-Hulman in its nonconference finale. The Thunder won 5-2 in only their second meeting against the Fightin' Engineers with their last matchup taking place in 2017.
Wheaton began the match strong, taking all three of the doubles matches. The senior pair of
Tim Steiner and
Jacob Williams in #1 doubles cruised to a 6-1 victory while the #2 duo of
Andrew Jang and
Andrew Winters along with the #3 doubles combination of
Evan Walther and
David Hill earned 6-3 wins in their matches.
In singles, the Thunder claimed the first point with a 6-0, 6-2 result courtesy of Steiner in #1 singles. Walther came in clutch during the tiebreaker as he won, 6-3, 4-6 (10-4) in #3 singles. Elsewhere, Jang also needed a tiebreaker, albeit in the set, to win his match, 6-1, 7-6 (7-4) in #4 singles. Rose-Hulman earned two points from wins at #2 and #6 singles, but this was not enough to prevent the visitors' defeat, and
Corin Tang put the result on ice for the hosts with a straightforward 6-1, 6-2 victory in his #5 matchup.
With another positive result, Wheaton improved to 9-6 on the season while Rose-Hulman fell to .500 at 9-9. The Thunder's next match will be in Rock Island on Tuesday against the Augustana Vikings, as they put their perfect conference record on the line. In addition, Wheaton will look for a ninth-straight victory for the first time since achieving that feat in 2017.
