Men's Golf places fourth at Lake Forest invitational as Swartz and Brown earn top five finishes

Jonah Swartz capped off his headline week with another runner-up showing
Mundelein, Ill. -- The Wheaton men's golf team returned to competition this weekend, taking part in the Forester Spring Invite hosted by Lake Forest College on Friday and Saturday. The Thunder squad notched its second-consecutive top five finish, building off of last weekend's runner-up placement at Hope College's tournament with a fourth-placed showing at this invitational. Wheaton was again led by Jonah Swartz, who capped his standout week by finishing second on the individual leaderboard. Sophomore teammate Wyatt Brown also had a strong weekend, coming in fifth place to help lead the Thunder to their spot near the top of a crowded field.

Aurora University's A team eventually won the 20-team tournament with a total score of 561 (-15), but the Thunder were tied with the Spartans in second place after Friday's opening round, as both teams shot a combined mark of 282 (-6) in an impressive first day on the course. The hosting Foresters came in second place, three strokes behind the winning Aurora squad, while the Spartans' B team placed third on a mark of 569 (-7), a single shot ahead of Wheaton in fourth. The Thunder shot even par as a team on Saturday to enter the clubhouse on a 570 total, three strokes ahead of fifth-placed Dubuque, to register their fourth top-five event finish of the season.

The reigning conference men's golfer of the week, Jonah Swartz, maintained his red-hot form by carding a personal-best mark of 66 (-6) in Friday's first round to lead the 107-player leaderboard heading into Saturday's second section. The senior stayed under par with a -2 (70) this afternoon to finish the weekend competition on a noteworthy total of 136 (-8), good for second place and just two shots behind the tournament champion from Lake Forest.

Wyatt Brown (pictured right) was not far behind his senior teammate in the standings, enjoying his best performance of the year with a 139 (-5) showing to snag a top-five placement. The second-year golfer carded a first round total of 71 (-1) on Friday and dropped this tally by three strokes today with a second round score of 68 (-4) that was the second-lowest total of the day among all players. Wyatt Brown

Sam Obitts joined the aforementioned pair in the top 30 of this weekend's leaderboard, registering marks of 73 in both rounds to finish with a combined two-day total of 146 (+2) to tie for 26th in the solo standings. Baylor Brogan was three shots behind Obitts on a weekend tally of 149 (+5) having shot an even par 72 on Friday that helped him tie for 42nd place in the event. Freddie Chan also participated in the competition, and the rookie carded a 74 in yesterday's opening round and a 78 from today's 18 to tie for 61st in the individual table.

Despite another satisfying weekend on the links, the Thunder men have very little time to rest on their laurels. Wheaton is right back on the course on Monday and Tuesday, as the squad heads to nearby Bolingbrook to compete in North Central College's Cardinal Classic.
