Orlando, Fla. -- Less than 24 hours after beginning its Spring Break schedule with a dominant 7-0 win over Curry College, the Wheaton women's tennis team returned to the courts on Thursday to take on Calvin University in the second of the Thunder's three matches this week. The Knights are in the middle of a strong season that has not seen them lose since their match against Division II side Davenport back in September, and the Michigan squad had just too much for Wheaton this afternoon, eventually claiming a hard-fought 4-3 win. The result drops the Thunder's record to 10-4, while Calvin improves to 6-1 on the year.
Calvin registered a smooth victory at #3 doubles to open today's match, but Wheaton answered back with a comfortable 6-2 win in the #2 doubles contest courtesy of
Ella Malone and
Tatum Thurstone. The #1 doubles fixture would determine which squad earned the team point heading into singles play, and the Knights prevailed in a nail-biting 7-6 [8-6] tiebreaker to give themselves an edge that would prove to be decisive in the outcome of the match.
The Grand Rapids team simply needed to split the singles contests to secure a team victory this afternoon, and that was exactly how it played out, with both squads winning three solo fixtures.
Madeline Gentry earned an impressive straight-set win in her #1 singles battle by a tally of 6-3, 6-2, and
Janet Kondo was victorious in her #6 singles matchup by the same scoreline. Thurstone made it a clean sweep on the day with a pair of 6-3 set wins at #5 singles. Both the #3 and #4 contests came down to a third-set tiebreak, but the two competing Calvin players won the race to ten points in the extra frame of their matches, and this was enough for the Knights to secure the necessary four points for the match decision.
The Thunder will look to shake off Thursday's disappointing result when they head to nearby Altamonte Springs for their last match of the Spring Break slate on Friday. Wheaton is set to face Transylvania University in a 12:30 PM (EDT) contest tomorrow.
