Altamonte Springs, Fla. -- The Wheaton women's tennis team headed to its third different venue in three days to face Transylvania University in the last of its Spring Break contests this afternoon. Just as they did against Curry College on Wednesday, the Thunder earned a 7-0 sweep over their nonconference opponents today to finish this week's slate with a winning record. Wheaton now owns a mark of 11-4 on the season and will take a break from official competition until Saturday, April 5th when the squad hosts UW-Eau Claire on campus. The Thunder also have a scrimmage coming up against NAIA opponents, Judson University, two weeks from now.
The Orange and Blue laid down an early marker by winning all three doubles matches this afternoon.
Lydia Adams and
Madeline Gentry teamed up to win their #1 doubles contest by a 6-3 margin, while
Ella Malone and
Tatum Thurstone combined to log another victory at the second position, this one at a dominant 6-1 scoreline.
Janet Kondo and
Alexandra Wachs also enjoyed a comfortable doubles win on Friday via a 6-2 result at the #3 spot.
Gentry was nearly perfect in her #1 singles duel on Friday, winning 6-0, 6-1. Wachs put in a similarly strong performance, capturing her #2 singles matchup with a pair of 6-1 set wins. Adams continued the Thunder's momentum with a 6-3, 6-2 victory in the third spot in the lineup, while Malone needed three sets to outlast her Pioneers opponent in a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 battle at #4 singles. Thurstone secured her status as the only Wheaton player to win all six of her matches this week with a confident 6-1, 6-3 result at the fifth position, and Kondo played her part in confirming the team sweep with a straight-set win of 6-1, 6-4 in her #6 singles match.
After a busy and positive week of action in Florida, the Wheaton team will return to cooler temperatures for the final portion of its regular season schedule and the slow build-up to the CCIW Tournament in late April.
