Thunder men's tennis team tops Calvin, 5-2, in final Spring Break match

Orlando, Fla. -- The Wheaton men's tennis team took to the USTA National Campus courts this afternoon to face the Knights of Calvin University on its third-consecutive matchday. Thursday's contest served as the last one of this year's Spring Break slate for the Thunder, and Wheaton will leave the Sunshine State on a good note, having claimed a second-straight win via a 5-2 victory over its Michigan opponent.

Calvin captured the #3 doubles match to start this afternoon's meeting, but this did not cost Wheaton, as the Thunder still earned the point from doubles play with wins at the first and second positions. Tim Steiner and Jacob Williams combined for a comfortable 6-2 win at #1 doubles, while David Hill and Andrew Jang posted the same result in their #2 doubles fixture to give Wheaton an early advantage on the scoreboard.

Andrew Winters registered the first victory for the Thunder in singles play on Thursday, besting his #6 singles rival 6-2 in the first set before grinding out a 7-6 tiebreak win in the second frame. The Knights tied the score at two points apiece with a result at #4 singles, but Wheaton secured the match win with straight-set victories from Corin Tang and Evan Walther. Tang won his #5 singles duel, 6-2, 6-4, and Walther subsequently clinched the decision for the Thunder with a 6-4, 6-3 win on the three line. Williams then added gloss to the final tally with a pair of 6-4 set wins in his #2 singles match to complete a perfect individual day of results.

After beginning the 2025 campaign with nine nonconference contests, the Thunder team can finally turn its attention to CCIW play next week. Wheaton is away from competitive action until Saturday, March 22nd when it hosts Carroll University in the conference opener.
