Hanover Park, Ill. - The Wheaton men's tennis team opened CCIW play on Saturday with a matchup against Carroll at Centre Court Athletic Club. The Thunder edged the Pioneers in earning the 4-3 victory.
Wheaton's first point of the day came in winning two of the three doubles matches. The Thunder No. 1 doubles team of
Tim Steiner and
Jacob Williams earned a 6-3 victory against Carroll's Adrian Gomez and Daniel Ezcurra. The No. 3 doubles team of
Andrew Jang and
Andrew Winters defeated Carroll's Jack McCaffrey and Mark Trinka 6-4 to give Wheaton the critical doubles point.
Winters earned Wheaton's first singles win as he defeated Felix Persson of Carroll 7-6, 6-1 in their match at No. 6 singles. Williams gave Wheaton a 3-0 lead with a 6-3, 6-2 victory against Ezcurra at No. 2 singles. Jang Secured the decisive fourth win with his 7-5, 6-4 victory at No. 4 singles against Jack McCaffrey.
Wheaton hosts Judson University next Friday in a scrimmage. The next varsity competition for the Thunder is Wednesday, April 2 at the Wheaton Tennis Courts.
