Decatur, Ill. – The Thunder volleyball team traveled to Millikin on Wednesday night for a key CCIW matchup against the Big Blue. Wheaton won the first two sets, however, the hosts battled back to defeat the Thunder, 3-2. Wheaton won the first set 25-18 and picked up a 27-25 victory in the second set. Millikin picked up a 25-23 victory in the third set, followed by a 25-21 Big Blue win in the fourth set. The hosts completed the rally with a 16-14 win the fifth set.
Wheaton is now 17-5 overall and 1-2 in CCIW play, while Millikin improves to 8-8 overall with a 2-1 mark in CCIW action.
Katherine Adkison led the Thunder with 16 kills and
Jordan Benford added 12.
Sydney Overweg tallied eight kills, while
Mary Patrick and
Paris Griffin each had six kills.
Setter
Lacey Higgins had 24 assists, and
Reese Donahoe added 20 assists. Libero
Sarah Sanderson had a team-high 19 digs.
Miriam Pozdol-Niego and Jordan
Benford each had 12 digs. Overweg and Griffin each had three total blocks. Major had four service aces, while Benford and Adkison each had two.
The Thunder remain on the road this weekend with three matches in Michigan. The trip begins on Friday night with a match at Kalamazoo College. Wheaton will compete in Calvin University's Midwest Invitational on Saturday with matches against University of Mount Union and the host Knights.
