Wheaton women's tennis team tops Augustana, 6-1

Wheaton, Ill. -- The final home match of 2025 arrived for the Thunder women's tennis team on Saturday, as Wheaton welcomed Augustana College to the campus courts for a conference contest. The home side rolled past the visiting Vikings by a score of 6-1 this afternoon to return to winning ways. Wheaton's overall record is now 6-2 with a 4-1 mark in CCIW action, while Augustana drops to 3-1 in conference play after suffering their first loss of the season.

The Vikings claimed the first win in doubles play on Saturday, but it ultimately counted for nothing, as the Thunder grabbed victories at #1 and #2 doubles to earn the opening point. Janet Kondo and Ella Malone put in a convincing performance at #2 doubles with a 6-1 result, before Madeline Gentry and Tatum Thurstone ensured Wheaton's point with a 6-4 success in the lead matchup.

Augustana again tallied the first victory in the singles competitions for its lone point of today's match, but the Thunder ran out decisive winners thanks to positive results in the remaining five spots. Freshman Mia Luo enjoyed a near-flawless outing at #6 singles with a 6-1, 6-0 success, before Thurstone completed her personal sweep on the day with a 6-1, 7-6 outcome in the #2 dual. Sophie Dew was on her way to victory at the #5 position when her opponent retired prematurely, while doubles partners Kondo and Malone notched wins at 6-2, 7-6 and 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 [10-6] totals, respectively, to wrap up an impressive home court showing for the Thunder.

After completing a busy home slate, Wheaton will head out on the road for its remaining three matches of the fall season. The women's squad travels to central Illinois next weekend for a 3:30 PM Friday contest at Illinois Wesleyan University and an 11 AM matchup with Millikin University next Saturday.
