Wheaton, Ill. – The Thunder women's soccer team hosted Millikin University (3-8-4, 0-3-2 CCIW) on Saturday night for a key CCIW match that also served as "Senior Night" for the Thunder. Each team tallied a goal in the second half as the contest was a 1-1 draw. Wheaton is now 5-4-6 on the season, with a 2-1-3 record in CCIW play.
Wheaton possessed the ball 59 percent of the time in the first half of the match. Despite the possession advantage, Millikin out-shot the Thunder 5-4, including a 4-3 advantage in shots on goal. Wheaton's freshman goalkeeper
Leah Roe made four saves in the first 45 minutes, while Millikin netminder Jessica Bearley made three saves for the guests.
Millikin put pressure on Wheaton's defense midway through the second half as the Big Blue got shot attempts off in the 62
nd and 64
th minute. In the 68
th minute, Millikin's Kameron Zurzolo launched a high arcing shot from 35 yards out that came in under the cross bar, yet over the outstretched arms of Roe to give the Big Blue a 1-0 lead.
Wheaton responded with pressure of its own as the Thunder had six shots following the Millikin goal. Following a Millikin shot in the 81
st minute that was saved by Roe, the Thunder offense again pressed Millikin's defense. The hosts were awarded a corner kick that bounced around and
Grace Crowder collected the ball and blasted a high shot that came in under the crossbar, hitting the bar. Crowder's shot bounced directly down off the crossbar and just inside the goal as scored a goal to tie the match at 1-1 with 8:29 remaining in the match.
A bit of chaos ensued following Crowder's goal as Millikin players received a yellow card, followed by a red card as the Big Blue played down one player for the final eight minutes of the match. Wheaton had two shots in the minutes following Crowder's goal and Millikin had one shot.
Wheaton had a 15-13 advantage in shots in the match, while Millikin had a 9-7 edge in shots on goal. Wheaton was awarded seven corner kicks in the match, while Millikin took three.
Roe made eight saves in the Thunder net, allowing just the one goal. Bearley made five saves for the Big Blue.
Wheaton returns to Joe Bean Stadium on Wednesday night to host Carroll. The upcoming match against the Pioneers will begin at 7:00 p.m.
