Women's soccer secures a CCIW Tournament spot with a 3-1 victory at home against Carroll

Wheaton, Ill. - Wheaton women's soccer sought to get back to its winning ways on Wednesday against the Caroll Pioneers after playing to draws in two straight matches, including last week's thriller against Milikin on Senior Day, which saw a late equalizer from the Thunder. Wheaton came in riding a four-game unbeaten streak and both goalies in tonight's match have dominated conference play. Each goalie is second in the conference in clean sheets with two apiece. Wheaton broke Caroll's streak against them today in a convincing 3-1 victory tonight. With the win, Wheaton moves to 6-4-6 on the season, Caroll 5-5-5. Most importantly, the Thunder secure a top-six placement in the upcoming CCIW Tournament and chance to compete for the CCIW Tournament Championship. Wheaton improves to 3-1-3 in conference play, while Carroll drops to 2-4-1 in CCIW action.

The scoring started early for the Thunder in the 11th minute. After a shot from Lily Lindquist was blocked and sent off the pitch, Wheaton found itself with a corner kick. Lauren Walmer, set and delivered into the penalty box. As the ball flew, it increasingly continued to cut towards net. The Pioneers' goalkeeper looked to punch the ball out but, in her effort, narrowly missed and the ball bounced into the back of the net for one of Wheaton's most impressive goals to date.

Wheaton wasted no time finding their second goal, this one coming in the 13th minute of the game. After some sublime passing from the Thunder which set up them up well in the offensive zone, Olivia Martin and Cami Tofilon connected on a beautifully executed triangle pass. Martin returned it to Tofilon who, from about 20 yards out, delivered a strike from her right foot. Executed to perfection, it tipped off the keepers hand, off the post, and into the back of the net giving Wheaton a 2-0 advantage.

Wheaton was not satisfied with the lead they had gained and found themselves with another fantastic chance in the 17th minute. Walmer created a turnover in Caroll's zone, within the chaos the ball found Tofilon's foot once again. She delivered a cross from the left side with numbers in the box and found Martin in the center. Martin flew in with the header and put it in for her first goal of the match as well as Tofilon's first assist, with the two connecting on back-to-back goals.

Caroll ended up scoring one goal in the 80th minute of the game, but it proved to not be enough as the Thunder took down the Pioneers 3-1 off the back of their first half surge. This win ended Caroll's unbeaten streak against Wheaton at four, and kept the Thunder in third place in the CCIW.

Walmer, Tofilon, and Martin all scored with Tofilon and Martin each recording assists. Calah Strong, Martin, and Tofilon each recorded a shot on frame with Walmer recording one. Caroll pressed the action in the second half, outshooting Wheaton for the game 17-13 but Wheaton enjoyed the advantage in shots on goal 8-7. Wheaton also recorded more corners, one of which led to a goal, 8-1.

Wheaton will conclude conference play against the North Central Cardinals in Naperville at 7:00 p.m. next Wednesday.
