Women's soccer plays to a 1-1 draw thanks to a late goal at Carthage

Kenosha, Wis. – The Wheaton women's soccer team traveled to Carthage College on Wednesday for a conference match against the Firebirds. A late Wheaton goal tied the match up as the contest concluded in a 1-1 draw at the end of 90 minutes. Carthage is 6-4-4 overall and 2-0-2 in CCIW play following tonight's result, while Wheaton is 5-4-5 overall and 2-1-2 in conference action.

Carthage out-shot the Thunder 9-4 in the first half tonight, including a 3-1 edge in shots on goal. The Firebirds' first two shots on goal occurred in the first 12 minutes of the match. It was then approximately 25 minutes until the hosts accomplished another shot on goal, however, they made the most of the opportunity. The shot by Ruby Hillegass went into the back of the net in the 37th minute to give Carthage a 1-0 lead. Carthage maintained the 1-0 lead at the halftime break.

Wheaton picked up the pace in the second half as it was Wheaton with a 9-5 advantage in shot attempts. Each team had four shots on goal in the final 45 minutes. Olivia Martin scored the equalizer for the Thunder in the 82nd minute. Martin blasted a shot from 30 yards out over the top of Carthage goalkeeper Ainsley Stallworth's head into the top left corner of the net. Martin's goal came from an assist by Julia Tallungan.

Carthage held a 14-13 advantage in shots tonight, with a 7-5 edge in shots on goal for the hosts. Wheaton was awarded two corner kicks tonight, while the Firebirds had one.

Wheaton's freshman goalkeeper, Leah Roe made six saves tonight. Roe's six saves tonight are her second-highest save total in a match this season, just behind the seven stops she made in a 1-1 draw against UW-Eau Claire on September 5. Stallworth made four saves in the Firebirds' net.

Wheaton returns to Joe Bean Stadium on Saturday to host Millikin at 4:30 p.m. Saturday's match against the Big Blue is Senior Day for the Thunder, with ceremonies honoring Wheaton's seniors scheduled to begin at approximately 4:15 p.m.
