Wheaton men's golf team begins season at Aurora Double Gun Invite

Aurora, Ill. -- The first competition of the 2024-25 season arrived for the Thunder men's golf program on Tuesday, as Wheaton sent two teams to participate in Aurora University's Double Gun Invite. The five players competing for the Thunder A squad today eventually claimed a seventh-place finish on the 18-team leaderboard, while the quintuple who made up Wheaton's B group placed 16th, ahead of Elmhurst and North Central's B teams. The A grouping earned a total score of 619 in the 36-hole competition, finishing 20 strokes ahead of eighth-placed DuPage and just three shots behind Hope College in fifth.

Sophomore Wyatt Brown had the best total marks of the ten Wheaton golfers in Tuesday's season-starter, posting a first-round tally of +3 and a second-18 score of +4 to enter the clubhouse tied for tenth on the 92-player leaderboard. The senior duo of Jonah Swartz and Sam Obitts were not far behind and both earned Top-25 finishes thanks to combined totals of 154 (+10) and 156 (+12), respectively. Swartz bettered his first round performance by four strokes in the second half to come in 17th place overall.

Freshman Freddie Chan put in a strong showing in his collegiate debut, shooting a two-round score of 158, including a +4 first round, to place 30th in the individual standings. Tannen Reed completed the lineup for Wheaton's A team this afternoon with a combined mark of 163 after both rounds.

Baylor Brogan led the Thunder B group on Tuesday, carding a 159 total to come in 36th overall and the sophomore shot an impressive +3 second round in today's event. Lance Otremba matched Reed's round score of 163, while Ryan McLain and Aidan Quinlivan each finished their rounds with a total score of 168. Jackson Swartz carded a two-round tally of 178 in his first showing for the Orange and Blue.

Having started the fall campaign in solid form, the Thunder men will next travel to Michigan on Monday for the "Point O'Woods Collegiate" event hosted by Rochester Christian University.
