Waukesha, Wis. -- Less than 24 hours after beginning the weekend with a victory at Carthage College, the Wheaton women's tennis team headed over to the Firebirds' fellow Wisconsin-based CCIW program for another conference road match. The Thunder rolled past the Carroll Pioneers in this afternoon's meeting by a score of 6-1 to move to 4-1 on the season and keep their unbeaten CCIW record intact at 3-0 at the halfway point of Wheaton's fall schedule.
The hosting Pioneers claimed the #1 doubles contest on Saturday, but Wheaton was victorious in the other two fixtures to ultimately earn the day's first team point.
Ella Malone and
Tatum Thurstone swept their #2 doubles rivals aside by a commanding 6-1 margin, before
Delaney Canning and
Janet Kondo combined for a convincing 6-2 result in the third spot.
The Thunder dominated the singles competitions today, winning five of the six matches in straight sets.
Madeline Gentry was nearly perfect in her 6-0, 6-1 win at #1 singles, while Kondo matched her fellow junior with a 6-1, 6-0 triumph in the final position. Canning also posted a first-set shutout and won the second frame of her #4 singles duel, 6-2. Malone's strong rookie season continued with a comfortable pair of 6-1 set wins at #3 singles, meaning that the Texan has now won nine of her first ten collegiate matches and has yet to drop a set in singles play this year.
Lydia Adams then put the seal on another confident Wheaton showing with a 6-2, 6-2 win in her #2 matchup.
After a successful weekend in Wisconsin, the Thunder women's squad will start the second half of their 2024 fall slate next Saturday with a conference home opener against North Park. First serve is scheduled for 11 AM at the Wheaton Tennis Courts on campus.
