Kenosha, Wis. -- The Thunder women's tennis team traveled north of the state line this afternoon for the first of its two CCIW road matches in Wisconsin this weekend. Wheaton faced off against the Carthage College Firebirds and secured a 5-2 victory to improve to 3-1 on the year and 2-0 in conference play. Friday's result continued Wheaton's dominant streak against today's opponents, with the program's last loss to Carthage taking place ten years ago in Kenosha.
The visitors won two of today's three doubles fixtures to claim the first point of the match.
Lydia Adams and
Madeline Gentry combined to post a 6-4 result at the first position, while the underclassman pair of
Ella Malone and
Tatum Thurstone impressed in their 6-2 #2 doubles victory.
The Firebirds earned their points from the first two singles matches on Friday, but this was not enough to stave off a team defeat, as the Thunder captured wins in the other four positions. Doubles partners Malone and Thurstone doubled up for the day by taking their #4 and #6 singles battles at 6-2, 6-1 and 6-3, 6-4 lines, respectively. The senior Adams shrugged off a 6-1 first-set dip in her #3 singles contest to earn a comeback victory via a 6-3 second-set result and a gutsy 7-5 win in the decisive third frame.
Delaney Canning then registered Wheaton's final point of the evening with a three-set victory in her #5 singles match, also coming back from a loss in the first frame to win in three, including a statement 6-1 result in the third set.
The Thunder will look to maintain their strong early-season form and claim their second win of the weekend tomorrow when Wheaton meets Carroll University in an 11 AM matchup in Waukesha.
