Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

Thunder men's tennis team edges Carroll, 5-4, for key CCIW win

New Berlin, Wis. -- After getting back in the win column on Wednesday, the Wheaton men's tennis team traveled north to Wisconsin this evening for a conference matchup against the Carroll Pioneers. Playing indoors after heavy winds prevented the match from happening on Carroll's campus, the visiting Thunder outlasted their hosts for an important 5-4 victory and claimed their second CCIW win on the spin. Friday's result improves Wheaton's overall record in 2024 to 11-4 and brings the team's four-match road stretch to an end.

Jacob Williams and Joey Geisz returned to their usual #2 doubles pairing this evening and claimed an 8-5 victory to register Wheaton's first point. But the home side edged the other two doubles fixtures in 8-7 tiebreakers to gain the upper hand on the scoresheet heading into singles play.

Carroll then won both the #1 and #2 singles matches in convincing fashion to draw within a point of victory. But the Thunder got all four points that they needed from the remaining singles contests to snatch a dramatic road win. Geisz brushed aside his #3 singles counterpart at 6-1, 6-0 to claim his second win on the night, while Evan Walther assumed the #4 singles spot and triumphed at a 6-2, 7-6 line. Fellow rookie Andrew Jang won his #5 singles battle, 6-1, 6-4, and Michael Walmer got to complete the Thunder comeback with a 6-2, 6-4 victory in the final singles match to seal the decisive fifth point for Wheaton.

After ending its travels on a high note, the Thunder men's team will return to campus for its first home match in almost a month next week. Wheaton is scheduled to face Augustana College at 4:00 PM on Tuesday on the Wheaton Tennis Courts.
